Dean Karnazes and the Diet I'm Using
Tuesday, January 29th, 2008Tim Ferris, of the 4-hour work week fame, posted this interview with a passing reference to ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes back in April of last year, but I just stumbled across it a few days ago. [There is actually a good interview with Dean over on Trifuel - sorry for the confusion].
I read Karnazes book back in 2005 and he has been something of an inspiration to me. Though I know my knees couldn't handle an ultra (or even a regular 26.2 marathon), I'd like to think that one day I might run a half marathon and perhaps even do a half-triathlon.
Back in the day of 400 pounds, I took the radical step of eliminating almost everything and eating grape nuts exclusively. I don't think I'm going back there (for a variety of reasons) but limiting choice seems to be a wise path. My most successful periods of weight maintenance came when I managed to trim down my food choices significantly. It worked for almost five years when I went vegetarian (but god I love me some steaks).
Tim has a variation on Dean's plan. I think it looks promising. Of course, I'm both scared and excited about his fourth rule, "Take one day off per week."
I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t downregulate from extended caloric restriction. That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia.
Oh my. Well, let's begin by eating clean for a week and see what happens. If all goes according to past results, I should be feeling like a bit of a superhero by this Saturday's weigh in (even if I wouldn't want anyone to see me in tights just yet).

That isn’t an interview. In fact, it’s barely a passing reference to Karnazes.
Is there an interview elsewhere?

Sorry, I corrected the post and included the link I originally wanted to list (see above). Tim’s post is a variation on Dean’s diet.
