You're really going to eat that?
Monday, January 28th, 2008
I forget that when I go into diet mode my food choices make people scratch their heads.
For example, yesterday I made a Spinach-Bean Glop that is both tasty (to me) and filling. It has plenty of protein and nutrients and just enough carbohydrates to keep me from feeling starved (but low-low sugar). It tastes good when mixed with non-fat cottage cheese, used a spread on roasted turkey, or eaten "raw".
Of course, it looks like baby crap.
Which is probably what my mother-in-law was thinking when saw me working at the food processor yesterday:
"What are you making?"
"Spinach-Bean Glop"
"Oh. Um, okay." (raised eyebrows and wicked smile)
My wife was a little more direct.
"You're really going to eat that?"
"Yes, it's good. You should try it."
"Um, no." (scowl and a crinkled up nose)
One person's paste is another person's pudding
What's interesting here is that my wife dropped the better part of 80 pounds over the last 18 months, and she did it in part by eating a cottage cheese-oatmeal-whey mixture that not only looks worse than my Spinach-Bean Glop but both smells and tastes awful. At least, I think it does. My wife loves it and swears by it.
Why I (and others) eat glops and slops
I think the toughest part of getting into a diet is refusing those foods that got you into trouble in the first place. Some programs try skirt the rules by allowing you eat what you want so long as you stay within the appropriate number calories and/or the "right" percentage of fat, carbs, and protein.
I guess that works for some people but all that does to me is make me even more hungry. Besides, I am really bad at all that tracking stuff people want you to do. So instead, I just eliminate all the bad foods from my diet. That's easier for me and one reason you won't see me posting calorie counts on this site.
So here's to the return of Glops and Slops! ![]()
